Marc Pfaff is an interdisciplinary researcher and lecturer with a background in design, philosophy, and cultural studies and, since 2024, guest professor at Design and Computation. He completed his PhD in Art and Media Studies at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) with a media historical investigation on the genealogy of designing (Ger. »Entwerfen«) as a civilisational technique. Prior to his guest professorship, Marc has taught at different universities including the University of Cologne, the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Since 2015, he is also a member of the Board of International Research in Design (BIRD) and co-editor of the eponymous book series published by Birkhäuser. Recent areas of focus of Marc’s research and teaching include the history and theory of media techniques, epistemic practices, and generative strategies in art and design; technologies of scholarly knowledge production and organisation; and the critical analysis of AI, computation, and the digital technological condition.
